The project for the bakery is located in a corner store on the east side of a commercial block in Asa Sul, Brasília. These blocks have front canopies over level sidewalks that connect the store fronts and “extended canopies” at their ends, forming large covered balconies over the public circulation area. Thus, we consider that the store has two “fronts”: the first, smaller in size, faces the commercial street. The second faces the balcony at the end of the block, with a view of a public green area and the internal street connecting the city’s residential blocks, called via W1.

The project is based on the idea of using the public covered balcony as the bakery’s dining room, just like the “sidewalk tables” space in traditional cities. In this way, the store space is reserved for the kitchens, bathrooms, playroom, event room and the display window. The display window, in turn, is one of the most important elements of the project. Its space is divided into two complementary parts that are visible from the outside. The product display is directly facing the balcony (counter) while the internal display (shelves) is accessible to the customer through an internal corridor that is also visible from the balcony. In this way, we allowed customers to “pass through” the display window and the internal space of the store to choose what they want, as if they were on the inside of the counter of a traditional bakery.

All the external sidewalks and balcony received the same type of ceramic flooring, similar to the floors found in some stores in the surrounding area. Internally, the store uses basically two materials: exposed concrete (flooring and facades) and natural wood (doors, frames and furniture). The facade finish consists of a layer of concrete molded “in loco”, fixed to the back walls. The materiality resulting from its artisanal construction process refers to the bakery’s own artisanal production process. The texture of its surface seeks to emphasize its superficial “cover” aspect, different from a structural concrete wall. The distribution of furniture on the balcony allows free access for pedestrians in general, without obstructions. The garden near the tables uses shrubs adapted to the local climate, while the public garden between the store and the W2 road was “adopted” by the store and is cared for by it.
