114s Apartment

BUILT

BRASÍLIA-DF, 2023

Located in Superquadra 114 of Asa Sul in Brasilia, the building where the apartment is located was designed by architects Marcelo Campello and Sérgio Rocha in 1961. It is a “blade” type building, a block with a modular glazed façade and a “back” façade, covered with hollow ventilation elements (cobogós). One of the aims of the project was to eliminate the existing compartmentalization in the social area and connect it to the ventilated cobogós façade at the back of the apartment. This resulted in a social, kitchen and dining area with natural cross-ventilation. In this way, the apartment had its social area enlarged and the kitchen was integrated into the living room. The residents’ goal with the renovation was to turn the apartment into a meeting place for family and friends.
With this premise in mind, the three-bedroom property was completely redesigned, creating a large social room with just one suite for the couple. We exposed the original structure of concrete beams and pillars that was embedded in the walls that were removed. The original wooden parquet flooring was removed, restored and reinstalled.

One of the most significant changes was the change in the position of the kitchen, which is now fully integrated into the dining and living room, with the addition of a side support space with a wine cellar. In this new organization, the equipment is partially exposed, while the fridge – the largest of them – has been “hidden” from view in the living room, positioned in the next room, which also functions as a laundry area.

The first bedroom was attached to the living room, while the second was transformed into a TV room and office, with the possibility of closing it off with a steel and glass frame. The en-suite bathroom was also repositioned and connected directly to the ventilated façade via the building’s cobogós, where it was possible to create a garden.
