Located in “block 05” of the Octogonal Area in Brasília, the building where the apartment is located was designed by architect Elvin Mackay Dubugras in the 1980s. It is a building with precast concrete facades and a perimeter structure, leaving the floor plan free of pillars. One of the goals of this renovation project was to maximize the apartment’s social area, transforming it into a meeting point for family and friends. With this premise, the 125m2 property with four bedrooms was completely remodeled so that the apartment had a large social room and only two bedrooms to accommodate the couple with a son.
One of the most significant changes to the project was the integration of the kitchen with the dining and living room. In this new organization, we repositioned the service area, created a toilet and two offices for the couple, who work from home. Two original bedrooms were attached to the living room, while the son’s bedroom was repositioned to make more space for the suite. The guest bathrooms and the suite were also reconfigured and renovated.
The first step in the project was to expose the existing concrete slab and beams throughout the entire guest area. Then, the floor finishes and coverings were unified or simplified. We used the same matte gray porcelain tile throughout the apartment and only two colors of rectangular ceramic tiles for the wet areas. The carpentry, in turn, uses only two types of finish: natural veneer or white textured surface.
